Jade Television Network: New
Tendency of Chinese Government Inflicting Criminal Charges on Dissidents
(Excerpt)
(August 10)
According to the China Information Center of Human Rights and Democracy
Movement, the founder of “Chinese Development Union” (also called CDU), Peng
Ming, sentenced to one and half years’ indoctrination through labour by the
Chinese government for criminal charges last year, was released yesterday from
Beijing Detention Center.
The Information Centre also points out that it is very common for Chinese
government to inflict criminal charges on political dissidents. It seems to have
become the customary tactics for the Chinese authorities in recent years. Such
charges could put political dissidents into prison and deprive them of freedom
without bringing about international denouncement. Moreover, these charges could
damage the dissidents’ good reputation and people’s trust in them.
The Information Centre claimed that 42 dissidents in Shanghai had been sentenced
since 1994. Only 3 of them were charged with “anti-revolution” or “ subvention
of the government”. The rest were all accused of “visiting prostitutes”,
“intentional assault”, “robbery” and other criminal charges. WuYangming, the
founder of the famous Chinese underground church “Bei Li Wang”, was sentenced to
death for the charge of “rape”.
