Zhong-Gong)Escaped to US for Asylum (Excerpt)
(July 30)
According to Hong Kong Based China Information Center of Human Rights and
Democracy Movement, Zhang Hongbao arrived in Guam, USA, in February this year.
The Guam Migration Court granted him political asylum on June 13, which was
officially confirmed on July 28. However, when the Migration Court re-opened for
trials on July 28, it indicated that it had received an official letter from the
Chinese Embassy in America, urging the US not to provide political asylum to
Zhang Hongbao.
Beijing Laid Charges Without Specifying Evidence
The document from the Chinese Embassy specified two points: 1) Zhang Hongbao’s
illegal exit of China, and 2) Zhang Hongbao’s involvement in criminal cases. But
the document didn’t mention any specific evidence.
China’s Central Television Station invited him to demonstrate his psychic
ability at the New Year Party twice in a row in 1989 and 1990. In 1990 the
Chinese Sports Newspaper reported that Zhong-Gong had 38 million students.
Before the Falun Gong incident, Zhong-Gong had been a major target of the
Ministry of Public Security, which characterised the nature of Zhong-Gong as a
pseudo-Qigong Group.
Hundreds of Attempts to Arrest Zhang Hongbao in Five Years
The Information Centre pointed out that the Ministry of Public Security had made
hundreds of attempts to arrest Zhang Hongbao since 1996. At present, it has sent
a large number of public security personnel overseas to arrest him. It has also
issued its top order, which says, “If Zhang Hongbao is found overseas and there
are difficulties in bringing him back to China, permissions are given to execute
him on the spot.” Since the suppression of Falun Gong in July last year, China
has intensified its suppression of Zhong-Gong. As a result, 3000 Zhong-Gong
bases were closed throughout the country and 60 leaders were arrested.
