The
Chinese Navy's Lethal Weakness
Spectator
Not long ago, Zhang Wannian, the General Commander of Chinese PLA (the People’s
Liberation Army), asserted that there be taking place a war in the Taiwan Strait
within the next five years. His assertion evoked quite a lot of repercussions
both domestically and internationally. Many signs suggest that recovering Taiwan
is going to be the top priority of the PLA.
Undoubtedly, Mainland China possesses much more yet advanced submarines than
Taiwan. Now, Model 093 nuclear-powered attacking U-boat, which symbolizes the
best combat effectiveness, will soon be in service, plus the imported “Logic”
and domestically made “Song” as well as the improved “Ming” are all in combat
readiness. In the next couple years, there will be two to three Model093 to come
into service. However when it comes Model094 which will carry 16 long-range
(8000kms) nuclear missiles, the US and Japan shall be more deterred. In case war
broke out in Taiwan Strait, it would be very likely that Mainland China take
preemptive measures without declaration. The narrow strait will be easily
covered in the shooting range of their missiles. Its hydrological situation
would also benefit the U-boats of Mainland China. The main force of Taiwan Navy
submarine can hardly survive under the saturation booming of missiles from
Mainland China. Once its anti-submarine combat forces were disintegrated, Taiwan
Navy had no way to fight back with only two Dutch-made U-boats and another two
made in the US which had served in World War II. Mainland China will definitely
win over the U-boats Combat strategically. But, we have not taken into
consideration another point that we can’t miss, i.e., no one can guarantee
either the US or Japan would not intervene.
To counter against attack from many aircraft carrier fleets of the US and
“Ninety fleets” of Japan, Mainland China has arranged its four modern aircraft
carriers as well as some other flag boats with ten thousand tons loading
capacity like “Lu Hai”, “Lu Hu” and “Lu Yang”, etc.,to enter the battlefield. In
the meanwhile, a number of U-boats and long-range missiles will be assigned to
support. Mainland China’s navy fleets have always been good at anti-submarine.
What’s more, “Lu Yang” which is equipped with Radar Remote-Control System and
carrying sea-based combat missiles, will be responsible for the defense of sky
territory. Thus, it’s hard to tell who is going to be the winner. But, if Japan
and the US assigned “Spring Tide” and “Sea-wolf” respectively to attack, it
would be almost impossible for China to win. Modern aircraft carriers will be
used for countering to counterparts on the other side; “Lu Yang” will be
responsible for air territory defense for the fleets. What Mainland China is
lack of is large-scaled destroyer like the “Fearless” of Russia, or giant
anti-submarine parole boat like P-3. In case the US arranged “Sea-wolf” which is
of the most advanced world level to attack the main force of China’s fleets or
its landing army, there must be a big loose for the Mainland China.
For the time being, military boats of Mainland China have comparably the least
anti-submarine capacity. Most boats only rely on the old-fashioned
anti-submarine rocket loaded in the front or anti-submarine torpedoes on both
sides. They do have one type of anti-submarine missile, but it was proved of
poor combat effectiveness in the service. It’s obvious that Mainland China is
way behind in the aspect of sonar technology, anti-submarine torpedo, and
anti-submarine carried helicopter, and so on. There is actually nothing for the
PLA to employ in the fighting with the world famous quiet “Sea-wolf”.
Furthermore, during all the local battles taking place in recent years, the US
navy has never exposed its mysterious submarine combat effectiveness. The PLA
has had no way to learn about it.
To be objective, the Guam-located B-52 is rather of more deterrent force than
actual combat effectiveness. If the US did arrange B-52 to attack the coastal
cities or any strategic targets of China, there must be an all-round war larger
than Korean War to break out between China and the US, which is not conforming
with the US’s benefit. Plus, China is absolutely not like Iraq or former
Yugoslavia. So, in the event that a war broke out in Taiwan Strait, most likely
it would be a local war of high scientific technology. The main force to deal
with Mainland China’s navy should be the advanced U-boats of Japan and the US
together with their strong anti-submarine combat effectiveness. Then Mainland
China will have mere opportunity to win the underwater war. Loose under water
would definitely lead to defeat of the whole war. In any case such a war like
“Jia Wu Sea War” took place for a second time, it would be another extremely
serious catastrophe to the Chinese, which would cause China to lose its
opportunity of entering the list of strong nations in the new century.
